Christoph, can you briefly tell us how you got into cycling:

Growing up, I played football and was a keen on mountain biking. In 2002 my passion for Ultracycling was born via a coincidence – since then I haven’t looked back - After hearing about the RAAM, I became restless – I wanted to train and take part in competitions to mould my body and mind for the most extreme Road Races available. An increasing number of smaller successes and wins in two 24 hour races on the way gave me my first taste of victory. My goals in mind, and constantly in the saddle, I put all my eggs in one basket and became a professional cyclist. There was no security, few sponsors but even more time to train. After taking part in my first RAAM, where I had to pull out for health reasons in 2009, it quickly became clear that I would try again. My next entry the following year 2010 was also plagued by illness, making the almost sensational victory of the RAAM in 2011 a real treat. I wanted more however having experienced both sides of winning and losing, and thus decided to dedicate myself to the sport for the long term. New goals and challenges came to mind with every victory – So every year I set out to improve my previous results.

What are your goals? In sport and in life?

It's an uphill battle, but turning my hobby and passion for cycling into a career is constant challenge. As part of my presentations, I like to address my personal goals, trying to motivate the audience to do the same. I feel that pursuing your own goals enthusiastically and remaining focused on what you are trying to achieve, absorbing your surrounding and experiences on the way, is the only way to achieve long-term happiness.

What were the greatest achievements for you personally?

Without a doubt - wining the Race Across America for the third time – not because I set the course record of 7 days, 15 hours and 56 minutes however – Having outperformed the entire field, the only remaining opponents were my id, ego and superego. I successfully fought my internal feud which was remarkably difficult.

Where do you like to cycle most?

Definitely not the US – far too much traffic and very hot. Back home in Styria (Steiermark), there are very beautiful areas. I also really enjoy my training camps in Spain – it’s beautiful there as well.

What do you like to do when you're not on your bike?

I love food - after indulging I often take some time to read and relax. I also have a personal life besides cycling, so spending time with friends and family is very special to me.

What does owayo mean to you?

owayo is more than a "normal sponsor" to me; they are loyal companions and have fulfilled my every wish for many years. We meet on a regular basis to fine tune and develop new products, the owayo team helps me organise local presentations every other year to share my experiences, and stories with other enthusiasts. Sometimes I feel we are in a long term and sometimes long distance relationship, especially valuing the support provided when other sponsors keep silent. owayo goes above and beyond my expectations, also giving me a feeling of being part of their team and not just an athlete in their repertoire.

What is/are your favourite product(s) from owayo and why?

Hands down - the softshell jacket - My support team also wears them because they are extremely comfortable. Of course we get them personalised to make sure we can tell them apart which can become especially difficult after getting up after only a few hours of sleep.
